I had a casual dinner at ChaCha moon just off Carnaby street the other night. And despite regularly popping over to Cowshed on Foubert place for mani-pedi, it has somehow failed to register in my brain that the area has gone through a transformation from a tacky wasteland to serious shopping destination.
When I first visited London back in the eighties, Carnaby street was a huge disappointment. For some reason I expected to walk straight into the swinging sixties when I passed Liberty’s department store, but instead I encountered a run down area area rammed with cheap chain restaurants and horrible tacky shops selling touristy paraphernalia.
After some serious regeneration in the late nineties and early noughties the area is cool and fun again. Lots of places to eat and drink, great shops, Cowshed spa, my absolute favourite place in London for a mani-pedi, and if make up is your thing Benefit, Pixi, Make up store and MAC all have stores in the area complementing the excellent make up department at Liberty’s.
